Welcome! The Southwest Workshop on Mixed Methods Research (SWMMR) is an academic organization that aims to further discussions on the theory and application of mixed methods research in the social sciences.

We invite you to submit your paper proposal to the Seventh Annual Southwest Workshop on Mixed Methods Research (SWMMR) through Conference Bit. If safe and possible, we will meet October 27 & 28, 2022 at the University of Notre Dame for an in-person event. 

To apply, please submit an abstract by May 2nd of no more than 500 words that contains the following information: 

(1) Name of applicant,  

(2) Contact email, 

(3) Summary of the paper, 

(4) An explicit explanation of how your paper incorporates mixed methods. Specifically, for papers focused on substantive topics, please explain how the two or more different methods used in the paper strengthen the key claim(s) of the paper in terms of measurement validity, internal validity, external validity, causal inference, or other aspects of the research design. For papers making a methodological contribution, please explain how the paper’s methodological argument(s) connect with recent scholarship on and debates about the theory of mixed method research.

(5) A key mission of SWMMR moving forward is to promote the work of our minoritized colleagues in the social sciences. Indeed, we have won a special grant from APSA that allows us to provide additional funding for those colleagues who, as a function of the nature of the Academy, have been systematically discriminated against. Consequently, we ask that you provide us with a brief statement about your positionality in the Academy, including your institutional affiliation, your position therein, and, if you wish to disclose, any demographic categories or other groups with which you identify. In this way we can better support those participants who, for reasons of race, class, sex, ethnicity, orientation, etc. have had to work especially hard to excel in their field.

Format: The annual workshop will include several panels of scholars who will present and discuss article- or chapter-length works in progress that either (a) utilize mixed methods in substantive social science research or (b) contribute to the methodology of mixed-method research. Participants will receive critical feedback from senior scholars, as well as feedback from the other participants. 

Costs: There is no conference fee. Meals, coffee, and snacks will be provided free of charge during the workshop. Participants are expected to fund their own travel and hotel costs, although SWMMR may provide lodging or travel credits in years when sufficient funding is received. In the event of an all-virtual conference, SWMMR may provide funds to some participants to support online participation, funding permitted.

Inclusivity: One of our goals for this workshop is to advance the professional development of junior scholars and graduate students. We therefore especially encourage paper proposals from graduate students in their last year and early career professors at the Assistant or Associate rank. Additionally, we are committed to fostering diversity in the field of methodology and strongly encourage submissions from members of underrepresented groups.
